Sea Turtles are on of the many marine species directly affected by plastic pollution. The close resemblance between their favourite foods and various plastic products are confusing turtles, causing them to ingest the harmful materials. When Coral comes in contact with plastic, the likelihood of disease increases from 4% to 89%. There is an abundance of bacteria and other harmful microorganisms in sea water and on Corals; if the Coral is abraded by plastic, it exposes the Coral to the harmful materials and pathogens. Floating plastic can also restrict sunlight from reaching the Coral, preventing oxygen providing algae from flourishing. Ensuring that our Oceans are plastic free is essential to the survival of our reefs, and the species that call them home. A majority of beach pollution comes from on land activity, such as recreation, but litter can also be washed up on shores via waves and tides. Ensuring that our beaches are plastic-free is very important for many reasons. Firstly, buildup of plastic along our shorelines bridges the gap between and and oceans pollution, putting the lives of birds and other land animals in danger. Plastic pollution is also causing beaches to close around the globe, having significant impacts on both tourism and their surrounding economies. Also, plastic that is dormant on beaches is more susceptible to photo-oxidation, which is the process that breaks down plastics into smaller, more dangerous pieces called micro plastics.
